• Advertisers left. After that Houston report, advertisers including Pepsi pulled their ads from Yahoo.
• Spam and bots. By 2007 an estimated three in four users in Yahoo’s chat rooms were bots.
• People moved on. Friends went to instant messaging, then social networks and phones. When AOL closed its rooms, it said they had seen “a steady decline in usage over the last several years.”

Are chat rooms safe now?

A chat room is as safe as its moderation. Look for posted rules, active operators and a way to report someone, and never give personal details to strangers.

The problems that closed the MSN and Yahoo rooms haven’t gone away. A room with rules, operators and an age policy is a different place from an anonymous free-for-all. Arynwood’s public rooms are for adults, have house rules and a report address.
